The paper highlights the results of two studies recently undertaken on the tourism
sector in Mozambique. These review the aggregate economic contribution and potential
of the sector, based on a new social accounting matrix (Jones, 2007); and a case
study of the local economic impacts of tourism for Praia de Bilene, a tourist resort
in Gaza Province located in the south of the country (Jones et al., 2007). Secondly,
and based on these findings, it seeks to identify the principal policy challenges
facing the sector over the medium-term and suggests some priorities for government
action.
